Mee Banjir Udang Mak Teh

Kuala Sepetang, Taiping

I heard about Mee Banjir Udang through a program on TV3 sometime last year. Initially, I wasn’t sure why mee banjir (flooded noodle?) until I went there Sunday. It so happened that there was a flood on Saturday night (as what I read in the newspapers) and the surrounding areas were flooded. The flood was still seen around the lower parts of the Larut Matang area when I passed by.

Or probably they name it mee banjir because of the overflowing soup of the bowl of noodles? The noodle comes in three sizes, i.e. RM8, RM10 and RM12. The differences are in the sizes of the prawns. We ordered the RM12 and you know what? It is the cheapest mee I have ever seen. We get six huge prawns which are very fresh, firm and sweet.

In case you are not aware, Kuala Sepetang is the river mouth which is also a fishing village. That’s why the prawns are all so fresh and cheap.

Before I go further, let me warn you that the Gerai Mee Banjir Mak Teh has lots of flies and bees. Yes, bees buzzing around you. The workers do make an effort to clear the tables of those prawn shells and wipe the table very clean with some chemicals but these persistent pests are everywhere. So, my advice is do not go too early. Flies and bees will go to sleep eventually. But I think if you go too late, you will be bitten by mozzies. Hehehe, it is a no-win situation, no?

The are two varieties to the mee udang. One is with soup and the other is the black type, fried with chillies and soya sauce. I have to say that the taste of the mee is nothing special. It could be due to the fact that I am so used to the Mee Udang Teluk Kumbar which uses a lot of tomato soup while the mee banjir has plain soup which is enhanced by the fresh prawns.

Anyway, if you are still interested to venture right up to Kuala Sepetang, make a visit. If you are a Chinese, I suggest you continue your journey to the pekan of Kuala Sepetang and enjoy the seafood restaurant call Tepi Sungai. Kuala Sepetang is off Taiping but please don’t ask me for directions.

The telephone number for Gerai Mak Teh is:

There are two other places you can visit at Kuala Sepetang. One is the Laut Matang Swampland and the other, I heard a charcoal factory.

Overall, I had an enjoyable trip because after the mee banjir, we went to the river mouth and I captured lots and lots of sunset photos.

Baeeekkkk Punyaaaa!!!
